Following the recent data breach targeting Coinbase users, the hacker behind the breach took action following the recent spike. The hacker swapped $42.5 million worth of Bitcoin for Ethereum (ETH) via ThorChain to launder the stolen funds. Hacker mocks blockchain researcher ZachXBT following Bitcoin (BTC) Etheruem swap The hacker sent an on-chain message to ZachXBT using Ethereum transaction login data that included the phrase “L bozo” and then posted a meme video of NBA player James Worthy smoking a cigar. ZachXBT flagged the message on his Telegram channel, writing that the wallet that handles the BTC-ETH exchange is associated with the hacker responsible for the Coinbase data breach that affected at least 69,400 users. The Coinbase data breach, first reported in a filing with the Maine Attorney General's Office, occurred in December 2024 but was uncovered on May 11. Coinbnase stated that the stolen data included names, home addresses and other personal information, while the hackers demanded a ransom of $20 million in Bitcoin for the release of the stolen data. However, Coinbase refused to pay the ransom and instead offered a $20 million reward for information leading to the identification of the hackers. Coinbase estimates that the data breach could cost them up to $400 million, while the U.S. Department of Justice has launched a formal investigation into the breach. *This is not investment advice.
