Telegram and Toncoin (TON) founder Pavel Durov has disputed French media claims that his brief detention in France last year was meant to force the messaging platform to comply with European Union regulations. In a detailed post on his Telegram channel, Durov denied the allegations, which he called “blatant misinformation,” and claimed Telegram had been complying with EU law long before the incident. The claims were sparked by a recent French report that suggested Durov’s detention had “finally” led Telegram to comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). “This is wrong,” Durov wrote, adding: “Telegram has always been compliant with EU law.” According to Durov, it was the French police, not Telegram, that began following proper legal protocols under the DSA after August 2023. He explained that since then, law enforcement requests submitted through proper legal channels have enabled French courts to access the IP addresses of suspected criminals using Telegram. Durov noted that Telegram, currently the world's second most popular messaging platform, invests millions every year to ensure legal compliance in all jurisdictions. He also noted that the company begins preparing for legal changes long before they come into force. *This is not investment advice.
